Quick Easy Low Prep Christmas Crafts Fot 1st Grade

Bats, ghosts, goblins, mummies, vampires, spiders, witches and pumpkins too… on Halloween night, do they scare you?! These simple Halloween crafts for kids are low prep and easy for your toddlers, preschool children, Kindergarten or 1st Grade students. They are far too cute to be scary!

1. SPONGE PAINTED GHOST

For this first simple Halloween craft, simply draw a ghost outline on a piece of black construction paper. Remember to instruct your students to paint inside the line. They will dip a foam circle brush or a pom pom pinched in a clothespin into some white paint. Once the paint dries, add ghost-shaped eyes and a mouth.

2. PATTERN GHOSTS

Here's another super easy sponge painted ghost craft that reinforces patterning. First, fold a piece of 6 x 18 black construction paper in half, and then in half again, and in half again. This will create guidelines, so that your students know where to paint. Remind them to dab the sponge brush vs. smearing it. Once the paint dries, model how to draw the eyes and mouth using a black crayon. Then, label the pattern with a white crayon.

3. ROOM ON THE BROOM

I always like to make my Halloween crafts for kids dual purposed and incorporate one of our content areas (reading, writing, math, science or social studies). This Room on the Broom craft is perfect for sequencing the events and retelling the story. Plus, they make a great classroom or hallway display.

4. PAPER PLATE SPIDER

This paper plate spider is super simple! In fact, I made this one with my three year old son. Just glue some black squares to a paper plate. My squares are 1.5 x 1.5 inches. Then, add some googly eyes and a paper mouth. I used a half circle to make the mouth. Finish the spider with some accordion folded legs.

5. PUMPKIN LIFE CYCLE CRAFT

6. PUMPKIN SHAPE BOOK

7. RECTANGLE FRANK

We love Rectangle Frank! Every piece is a rectangle… some short, some tall, some skinny, some wide. Rectangle Frank will help the students learn that a rectangle is a rectangle no matter how it is turned. Here's a quick rundown of the dimensions for each piece:

Head – 4.5 x 7 inches
Neck – 2.5 x 3 inches
Ears – 1.5 x 2 inches
Nose – 1 x 1.5 inches
Mouth – 3 x 1 inches
Bolts – .5 x .5 inches
Eyes (white) – 1.5 x 1 inches
Eyes (black) – 1 x .5 inches
Hair – 4.5 x 1.75 inches

8. TRIANGLE CAT

This simple Halloween craft uses all triangles, and that's why we call him Triangle Cat. Just cut some various sized black construction paper squares in half. Arrange the triangles into a cat shape, and glue them onto a piece of purple construction paper.

Body – 6 x 6 inch square cut in half
Head – 3 x 3 inch square cut in half
Ears and Tail – 2 x 2 inch square cut in half

9. POPSICLE STICK FRANKENSTEIN

I like to make this Popsicle stick Frankenstein at one of the stations during our classroom Halloween Party. For this craft you will need mini craft sticks, green paint, black foam, googly eyes and a black permanent marker.

10. SPIDER WITH WEB

Our art teacher makes these spiders with our Kindergarten students. First, have the students draw a web on white construction paper. Start by drawing an X, and then a vertical and horizontal line through the middle. Then, review the shape of a circle by drawing a small circle in the middle. Gradually, increase the size of each circle. For the spider, you will need two black rectangles. The students will snip off the corners to make them rounded. Glue them on the web. Add the eyes, and draw a mouth with a white crayon.

11. THE VERY BUSY SPIDER FLAP BOOK

Flap books are a great way to display student learning. For this book, you will need a piece of 6 x 18 inch black construction paper. Fold the paper into thirds. On the inside, have the students draw the beginning, middle and end of the story. You can see our "All About Turkeys" flap book here.

12. COTTON BALL GHOST

Ghosts are such a simple Halloween craft! For this one, draw a ghost outline onto black construction paper. Fill the inside with cotton balls or white pom poms. Add some eyes and a mouth to finish off this ghost.
