What is The Princess Diaries about?

This 2001 teen comedy was a breakout role for Anne Hathaway, earning more than six times its budget at the box office. The film served as a major comeback for Mary Poppins star Jule Andrews, as well, and led to a 2004 sequel.

A high-school outcast named Mia Thermopolis discovers that she's the heiress to a small European kingdom called Genovia, and is given three weeks to experience life as a princess before making up her mind about whether or not to one day rule as queen. After receiving a makeover and various lessons in etiquette, her unique story is leaked to the press, suddenly making Mia the new popular girl at school.

This leads to disappointed friends as well as a disappointed grandmother. But after making amends, and confessing her love to a boy, Mia reluctantly accepts her station as Princess of Genovia.

The film also stars Héctor Elizondo, Heather Matarazzo, Mandy Moore, Caroline Goodall, Robert Schwartzman, and Erik von Detten.
